Protect your engine
with Diesel Guard™

Presenting the Diesel Guard™ Audible Warning System

Fuelling your vehicle is part of your daily routine. Beware of a serious mistake. Filling your tank with petrol instead of diesel is not only careless but also costly. Every year, hundreds of thousands of diesel vehicles are accidentally fuelled with petrol. According to statistics, every fifth diesel driver makes a filling mistake at least once. Very often, simply the force of habit or a short lack of attention is an explanation. DieselGuard, however, provides a solution.

DieselGuard is a technical device for diesel vehicles that prevents fuelling mistakes. It is the size of a credit card and is simply fixed to the inside of the fuel tank cap. Since DieselGuard responds to light, it is activated as soon as the tank cap is opened. Therefore, before each fuelling attempt, an audible voice reminds the driver that this vehicle runs on diesel only.

Acoustically, one can no longer distin- guish modern diesel from petrol run vehicles. Since the diesel filling piece is bigger than the one for petrol, it is not possible to supply a petrol tank with diesel. Unfortunately, there is no such safety the other way round. With modern diesel motors, this lack of a safety device becomes especially fatal because they quickly damage when fuelled with petrol. The injectors of conventional diesel motors work under high pressure and must be permanently coated with the oily diesel fuel. Failure to do so causes dynamic and static friction, which can lead to permanent damage. That is why even a small amount of petrol can cause costly repairs whenever it leaves the tank of a diesel vehicle.

If the fuelling mistake is noticed before the engine is started, the driver still faces considerable costs. The car must be towed to a mechanic who has to clean the tank thoroughly. Congested filters, nozzles, valves and often a few other devices must be replaced. In addition, there can be further consequences for both employees and companies: the indi- vidual loses time and has to look for an alternative vehicle. For a company, such a vehicle breakdown might damage its image, especially in case of vehicle branding. As soon as the engine is started, individual neglect very likely causes an engine break- down. The resulting expense soon adds up to several thousand euros.

Fuelling mistakes are not insured events. This means that the compre- hensive insurance will not pay for any resulting damages, eg. engine break- down. Different federal courts have confirmed this insurance policy. A comprehensive insurance does not cover for damages that are caused by individual operating errors. To provide a vehicle with the proper fuel required to continue a journey is an operating act, according to the judges. Choosing the wrong fuel is an oper- ating error for which no insurance company has to pay. Also, private liability does not have to cover for costs that arise after a fuelling mistake. No matter whether it is a rented car or whether it is a private vehicle, the damage will most likely be covered at one’s own expense.

Misfuelling - The facts

The UK's Automobile Association Motoring Trust estimates that every year something like 120,000 motorists in the UK fill their car’s tank with the wrong fuel. It can cost from £80 up to £3000 - and take days to put right.
